Seeds are the lifeline of your farm business.
Let’s keep flower seeds in the hands of flower farmers.
OUR STORY
My mama waited 26 years for me to fall in love with flowers.
But when my own child was diagnosed with a medical condition that shook my world apart, flowers steadied my hands to hold her. On home days from the hospital, I walked the gardens, picking zinnias, delphinium and sweet peas to arrange in the quiet of our yard. Creating beauty with flowers gave me hope.
To support my daughter at home, I transitioned from my job as an electrician, into farming. I had intentions of starting a cut flower and vegetable farm. I bought seeds at the nursery, assuming they were locally grown. The package said “(local city) seeds”. Then I learned they were actually imported seeds, repackaged under “local” branding. I felt betrayed.
Why didn’t local greenhouses carry local seeds? Where do seeds come from? Maybe I could grow seeds? How hard could it be? (Hah!) I was about to dive down a rabbit hole of learning about seed saving. I still haven’t resurfaced.
My seed farming journey began with an online seed shop and a wholesale seed rack program, supplying 15 local shops with vegetable, herb and flower seeds annually. Each year, I grew less vegetables, and more cut flowers. I was drawn to the challenges of germinating and producing flower seeds. Unfortunately, there were limited resources explaining how to save flower seeds.
Now, with six years of flower seed saving mistakes under my belt, I’m here to support you.
What first started as sharing tips and tricks on social media, has transformed into a year-round membership, Flower Seed Farmers, and a print book, “True-to-Type: Saving and Selling Cut Flower Seeds for Profit and Joy”.
No matter where you are in your seed saving journey, I’m here for you.
If you’re just here to buy seeds, I appreciate you more than you know. You’re not just buying seeds, you’re buying me precious time with my daughter. That’s priceless to me.
See you in the field.
Erika.
