GROWING LETTUCE FROM SEED
Scientific Name: Lactuca sativa
Lettuce is a cool weather crop that can be planted when your soil can be worked in early Spring. The ideal germination temperature for lettuce seed is between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius. If exposed to higher temperatures, your lettuce seed may enter thermal dormancy – where the seed goes dormant and fails to germinate due to sub-optimal temperatures.
Your lettuce will grow best at temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. Select varieties that are bolt resistant and provide some afternoon shade when possible. Red varieties tend to have a better tolerance to the heat.
Sow your lettuce every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
Start your lettuce seed indoors 3-4 weeks for a head lettuce crop. Sow in cell trays or soil blocks and cover lightly with vermiculite. Keep a cool temperature during germination and mist if the soil is dry.
Harden off seedlings for 4-5 days and they will be tolerant of light frost. Space Iceberg, Butterhead and Romaine varieties 12” apart and compact varieties 6-8″ apart.
Sow your lettuce seed directly into your garden for a baby leaf crop when the temperature is still cool. Sow at a rate of about 5 seeds per inch. Barely cover and lightly tamp the soil to ensure good contact around the seeds. Your soil must be kept moist and cool to ensure good germination.
Harvest your head lettuce by cutting it at the base, leaving the outer layers for protection. Wash off the lettuce sap and cool your lettuce as soon as possible to avoid dehydration and wilting.
Harvest your baby leaf lettuce about an inch above the growing point when the leaves are over a few inches long.
